My comment on this affair ...
This whole saga has been a bit of a scary taste of what might be to come.
Russia has decided to turn the tap off on it's supply of gas to Eastern Europe during the dead of winter, and a really cold snap.
Russia is one of the world's major suppliers of gas together with Iran. 2008 has seen much flexing of muscles, and attempt to form together a cartel of gas producing nations to act in unison with respects to pricing and supply.
This can only be a bad thing for a world heavily dependant on gas, with dwindling supplies elsewhere.
This recent behaviour from Russia was all about sending a message, about just how dependent some countries have become, and how Russia can stop supplies so easily. It's easily scary foretaste of what might be to come. Russia still threatens the world, but not with pushing a button, but turning a tap ...
I had rather have a plain, russet-coated Captain, that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, than that which you call a Gentleman and is nothing else.
