Fried Coke - Good for the heart?

A new fast food is making its debut at U.S. fairs this Winter with the fat busting snack - fried Coke

Ping pong-sized balls of batter made with Coca-Cola syrup are deep-fried, then served in a cup, topped with more Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry on the top.

The creator, a chap by the name of Gonzales gave no indication of the calories in his creation and said he would not patent it.

“The best I can hope for is that it’s the original and hopefully the best fried Coke out there,” he said.

But Gonzales said the success of his fried Coke had inspired him. Next year’s fair-goers can look forward to fried Sprite or — for those watching their weight — fried diet Coke.

“We are trying to cut a lot of the sugar out of it. It has less calories but it’s still very, very sweet,” he said.

Slob’s beds Do Not Appeal To Dust Mites.

October 7th, 2006 katkat Posted in Animal Kingdom, Health and Science No Comments »

It’s official, not making your bed keeps you healthy. Dust mites present in everyone’s home can cause asthma, but they cannot live in the dry condition’s of an unmade bed.

The average bed is home to one and a half million mites, and they cause a number of common allergies, as they chomp away on human skin in the night; and then produce the allergens which we inhale.

Dust mites thrive in the warm humid conditions prevalent in an occupied bed, but they cannot multiply without moisture. So leaving the bed unmade during the day means that the water is not retained by the sheets, that means that the mites dehydrate and die.

Researcher Dr Stephen Pretlove who has developed a computer model to track how changes in the home can reduce numbers of dust mites said: “We know that mites can only survive by taking in water from the atmosphere using small glands on the outside of their body.

U.K. Government to Back Baldness Treatment.

October 7th, 2006 katkat Posted in Health and Science No Comments »

A British company Intercytex has developed a method of removing the hair follicles from the back of the neck, making them multiply and then re-implanting them successfully on the head.

This will be a dramatic breakthrough in the treatment of male pattern baldness. With the help of a £1.85m grant they are hoping to discover a method to make the hair follicles multiply automatically, which will allow the hair follicles , or the derma papilla, to be sold commercially.

The treatment has been tested on seven men with male pattern baldness, five of whom grew hair. The next test is twenty men with male pattern baldness.

During a 30-minute operation, hair follicles are taken from the back of the neck, then grown until there are thousands of them. They are then injected into the scalp where the baldness occurs.

Lancet calls For Compulsory Vaccinations against Cervical Cancer.

October 6th, 2006 katkat Posted in Health and Science No Comments »

The Lancet the British Medical Journal has called for the EU to follow the lead of the State of Michigan, which passed a bill on September 21 ruling that all 11 to 12-year-old sixth grade girls must be immunised, against cervical cancer.

The editorial comment demands that all British girls should be immunised in their first year of secondary school. In effect cervical cancer is transmitted by a sexually transmitted virus that can be stopped in a hundred percent of cases.

The issue is contentious because in order for it to be effective it has to be given before sexual relations are started, and there is an argument that it encourages promiscuous sex.

Males also carry the human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus spread by sexual intercourse that can trigger cervical cancer, and for the vaccination to be fully effective then it must target both sexes. To immunise only the female means that it is effective in only two thirds of the cases.

Imaginative Nobel Prize Won By Stinky Feet.

October 6th, 2006 katkat Posted in Health and Science, Odd News No Comments »

The idea of the Nobel prizes was certainly a good one, and many prize winners have improved the quality of many people’s lives. - I think. I say I think how many can we recall?

The truth is they are generally too sombre and plain boring they don’t grip the imagination.

A new innovative Nobel prize is being sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association and Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students, and its aim is to change all that.

“The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative and spur people’s interest in science, medicine and technology,” said Marc Abrahams, editor of the science humour magazine “Annals of Improbable Research,”

The idea is too make you laugh and then make you think, this concept I can accept with some of the concepts, but some well………..

5-year old girl dies after visiting the dentist

September 29th, 2006 Chief Posted in Health and Science, Odd News 1 Comment »

Diamond Brownridge, a 5-year old girl from Chicago, Illinois, has died after a visit to the dentist. Children’s Memorial Hospital officials say that the girl was rushed to the hospital when she never woke up after being sedated for a dental procedure. She had been in a coma, on life support, since being admitted to the hospital early in the weekend.

“She passed very peacefully and beautifully,” said the hospital in a statement that the family issued.

Ommettress Travis, the mother of the girl, was asked not to remain inside the room while dentists were operating on the girl to repair two cavities and to have at least two caps replaced. Travis says after thirty minutes she was asked to come back in and found Brownridge not breathing, in the dentist chair.

Hicham Riba, a specialist and professional in anesthesia, who was also licensed, was the dentist in charge of the procedure.

NY Health Authority Want To Make New Yorkers Eat Less Fat.

September 28th, 2006 katkat Posted in Health and Science, Site Stuff No Comments »

We all know that trans fat are bad for us, they cause heart disease and other health problems.

Unfortunately trans fats are also the cheapest fats to buy and they are the most frequently used in the catering industry. They are used in the production of bread and cakes, and in restaurants to make chips, amongst other uses.

Now New York health authorities want the cities 20,000 restaurants to radically change their ways.

Yesterday they produced a plan which will debate whether or not to force restaurants to switch to oils, and margarines with less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per average serving.

Restaurants would be 18 months to make sure all food items complied with this amount of trans fat, before any legal sanctions would be taken if the food outlets to comply.

Zero Gravity Surgical Experiment Successfully Completed

Imagine having to be strapped down to attempt a surgical procedure, can you imagine cutting flesh and the blood spurting out and up?

It sounds like the theatre set of a graphic horror movie. This scary concept was carried out by a French team as an experiment.

Earlier in the year the team carried out repairs on an artery in a rat’s tail, in condition’s as near to weightlessness as possible. Not that that there are many rat’s in space; but as technology advances one day there will be a real emergency in space that does involve people and surgeon’s will need to operate.

At the present time doctor’s are not really aware of how differently the body and its fluids will react in a weightless situation.

Mermaid Miracle Baby Walks.

September 26th, 2006 katkat Posted in Health and Science No Comments »

The dainty Peruvian tot, aged two has previously been referred to as the "Little Mermaid", as she was born with Sirenomelia, which mean her legs were fused together, and her feet were splayed outwards.

Milagros is a Spanish word meaning miracle and today Milagros Cerron is aptly named, after taking her first ever faltering steps.

The dainty Peruvian tot, aged two has previously been referred to as the “Little Mermaid”, as she was born with Sirenomelia, which mean her legs were fused together, and her feet were splayed outwards.

It is thought that there are only three cases of children with this disorder in the world. Usually the children die within a few days of their birth because of the stress placed on other organs.

She herself was fortunate in that her heart and lunges were not affected by this condition. She has enough problems with a deformed kidney and one set very low in her torso.
