'Family Circus' Creator Bill Keane Has Passed Away
By: Emily Cheever
Sad news today for comic traditionalists as Bil Keane, creator of Family Circus, has passed away of congestive heart failure at the age of 89.
Keane began his illustrating career in high school and continued drawing and creating comics during WWII for magazines like Yank and Stars and Stripes.
Keane married his wife Thel Carne in 1948 and the couple have five children. Devoted to his wife, Keane based the mommy character in Family Circus after her. His son Glenn went on to become a cartoonist as well and is expected to take over the Family Circus throne.
Family Circus, while occasionally cheesy, illustrated the humor and love in family life. Many people critic the comic for it's safeness but Keane was always proud of the comic's consistency and wholesomeness. The comic first appeared in 1960 and now has syndication in more than 1,500 newspapers across the country.
RIP Bil Keane.
