At least six policemen and a civilian have been killed and 13 wounded in a suicide attack on a governor's compound in western Afghanistan, police say.
Four attackers were killed in the assault in Farah province - one blew himself up at the gate and the others fought their way inside the compound.
They were shot dead after a gun battle lasting nearly an hour.
Government offices are frequently targeted by the Taliban. Farah is a strategic province bordering Iran.
The insurgents were armed with rocket propelled grenades, hand grenades and small arms, intelligence and police officials told the BBC.
It was not immediately clear if the governor was in the compound during the attack.
By David Bond BBC sports editor, in Athens
London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe has dismissed suggestions that the organising committee are placing extra pressure on Team GB football coach Stuart Pearce to pick David Beckham.
The former England captain will arrive in Athens on Thursday to play a key role in a ceremony to mark the handover of the Olympic flame to London.
"We have put no pressure on Stuart Pearce at all," said ex-athlete Coe.
"He has to pick the team he thinks can lift the trophy."
He added: "The coach is in pole position. You cannot put any pressure on him, it's entirely up to Stuart Pearce."
The torch will be flown to Cornwall on Friday for a 70-day, 8,000-mile relay around Britain culminating in the lighting of the flame in the Olympic Stadium on 27 July.
Beckham, who helped Los Angeles Galaxy win the Major League Soccer title last season, is tipped to be named as captain of the Team GB football.
GB squad

Stuart Pearce is expected to name his 18-man squad later this month

He is allowed to choose only three players over the age of 23

But Coe rejected the idea that by making the 37-year-old such a high-profile figure in the build up to the Games he was making it impossible for Pearce to leave him out of his squad.
"Obviously having David around the Olympic programme is a fantastic thing but we wouldn't expect a recall for Daley Thompson or Steve Redgrave just because they are involved [in the build-up]," he said.
"It would be bizarre not to use him on a regular basis.
"David has been with us from the beginning. He was travelling independently even before Singapore, even a few weeks ago he was with me in Los Angeles helping us with the global engagement programme. It's right he should be with us here."
Asked whether he would pick Beckham, London mayor Boris Johnson added: "Of course I would. But that's why I am not in charge of the football team."
Manchester City's Carlos Tevez says he will not apologise to Sir Alex Ferguson over the 'RIP Fergie' sign he held at City's Premier League title parade.
The Argentine striker's club have already apologised to the Manchester United boss over the incident.
Tevez said: "It seems like Ferguson is the president of England.
"When he speaks badly about a player, nobody says he has to apologise but when someone comes out with a joke, you have to say sorry. I don't say sorry."
Accusing the United manager of having "said the worst about me" in the past, Tevez added: "There's no relationship at all between me and Ferguson."
The comments, made to reporters in Argentina and carried on the Spanish-language website, www.ole.com.ar, appear to contradict the striker's initially contrite response.
Tevez who joined City in 2009 after leaving United, said at the time: "I got carried away in the excitement of the moment and I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to Sir Alex Ferguson, who I admire as a man and a manager."
The sign, passed to the 28-year-old Argentina international by a supporter during Monday's open-top bus parade in Manchester, was thought to refer to a 2009 response by Ferguson, when asked whether United would ever be City's underdogs.
Tevez at City

Games - 100

Goals - 57

Medals - Premier League, FA Cup

Ferguson had said at the time: "Not in my lifetime".
City apologised for the incident, describing the sign as "tasteless material" and saying Tevez had "made a significant error of judgement" in brandishing it.
United chief executive David Gill applauded the club for the prompt apology, telling Sky Sports News: "It was silly and inappropriate but City acted with commendable speed to say sorry."
Former Boca Juniors and Corinthians forward Tevez moved to English football in 2006, joining West Ham.
After helping them avoid relegation from the Premier League, he moved to United, where he spent two seasons, winning two Premier League trophies and the Champions League.
Tevez was top scorer in each of his first two years at City, but this season was punctuated by a self-imposed spell back in Argentina after an argument with manager Roberto Mancini about his alleged refusal to warm up in a Champions League game with Bayern Munich.
Mancini had said Tevez would not feature for him again but brought him back in for the title run-in.
He impressed on his return to City, scoring four goals in 10 games, and featured in the final-day win over QPR that clinched their maiden Premier League title.
Mancini told BBC Sport this week: "It's not difficult to manage Tevez. He's a good guy. We had a good relationship always.
"I don't know why we had that situation in September but in the end he's a good guy and a fantastic player."
And the striker has now said he could stay at the club months after it looked certain he would never play for City again.
It works much like an Eye-Fi card, and communicates with cloud services as well as other connected devices like your Android or iPhone via WiFi. The company is working hard to get the slots that work with the cards into many of the machines that we usually don't link up to the good ol' www -- but have often wanted to -- and it hopes to have everything in place later this year. This all sounds like a great deal right now, but just wait until your washing machine gets hacked and starts using scalding water on all your darks and delicates. More info at the source.

Darren Sammy does not drink tea, but at the start of the opening Test the West Indies captain qualifies as a perfect first guest nevertheless on Alison's Tea Break - a monthly video chat between the highly regarded cricket commentator, Alison Mitchell, and some of cricket's leading lights.
By the end of another packed England international summer, the ESPN cricinfo teapot should have witnessed interviews with some of the biggest names in world cricket.
Watch Sammy speak here about those who doubted his ability to make a success of the West Indies captaincy, about his method of leadership and his inspiration (including an unusual set of middle names).
He also chats about the level of involvement he believes the former West Inbian greats should have in the game, the welcome Chris Gayle will get if he does indeed return to international cricket and the time Dwayne Bravo tried to steal some turf from Lord's.
Alison's Tea Break is just one aspect of ESPNcricinfo's growing commitment to an English cricketing summer.
Mark Nicholas is another influential addition to the ESPNcricinfo stable and in his latest column he tells A tale of two Yorkshiremen , reflecting on the contrasting fortunes of Jonny Bairstow, who is poised to make his Test debut at Lord's today, and Ajmal Shahzad, who found such disfavour with Yorkshire that he was forced to make an early-season loan transfer to Lancashire.
George Dobell, our senior correspondent, is already renowned as the most informed cricket writers on the England scene and he will be leading our extensive Test coverage. He begins by reflecting on West Indies' dismal recent record in England.
As well as our unsurpassed ball-by-ball coverage, a host of other writers will be providing their distinctive take on the summer from the trenchant analysis of Geoffrey Boycott to the iconoclastic wit of Jarrod Kimber.
Neirher will there be any let up in our strongest-ever commitment to county cricket - including our increasingly popular live county championship blog.
There is no better place to follow the English cricketing summer, whether on the web or on our improved UK mobile service.
Welcome to our cricketing summer. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we will.
According to the Italian smartwatch creator, it's made a few changes to the device, primarily to allow for greater application compatibility -- hopefully this means something other than a stale Donut. As for delivery, the company will send out 300 I'm Watches by June 15th and will then use the next month to solicit feedback and conduct final tests. By July 15th, the company will resume delivery for its outstanding orders and expects to fulfill all current orders no later than September 15th. Customers who'd prefer to back out from the deal will have until July 15th to apply for a refund from the company, and as a goodwill gesture, it's offering a 15 percent discount for all those willing to endure the wait. For the complete details, just hop the break.

Rangers have had their appeal against a year-long transfer embargo and a £160,000 fine rejected by a Scottish Football Association tribunal.
The SFA had charged the club with six breaches of its rules and banned owner Craig Whyte from Scottish football.
Rangers argued that they should not be held responsible for Whyte's actions.
And administrator Duff & Phelps is hoping to launch a challenge to the transfer embargo, saying it was not a sanction open to the original tribunal.
The decision will not deter the consortium led by former Sheffield United chief executive Charles Green, who had an offer to buy the club accepted on Sunday and who was present at the appeal.
“This sanction was proportionate to the breach, dissuasive to others and effective in the context of serious misconduct”
SFA statement

"Our group went into the purchase of the club with this sanction in place, but we hoped the decision would at least be commuted," he said.
"We fully support the club as it considers an appeal against this latest decision."
Administrators were called in to Rangers on 14 February after the tax authorities went to court to seek payment of an unpaid bill that had built up since Whyte took charge at Ibrox in May last year.
Entering administration meant Rangers were docked 10 points by the Scottish Premier League - a move that helped ensure that Rangers lost their title to Glasgow neighbours Celtic.
An SFA disciplinary tribunal imposed the fine and transfer ban on 23 April after charging Rangers and Whyte of bringing the game into disrepute.
Duff & Phelps immediately challenged the decision, saying it could hinder chances of finding a new owner for the club.
The three-man tribunal - Lord Carloway, former Partick Thistle chairman Allan Cowan and Spartans chairman Craig Graham - will give full reasons for rejecting the appeal in writing "in early course", but the SFA issued a summary of its conclusions.
"It was competent for disciplinary tribunal to impose the additional sanction of prohibiting registrations of any new players of 18 years or older for a period of 12 months," it stated.
Green's consortium had hoped to persuade the tribunal to be more lenient

"The disciplinary tribunal was correct to determine that the conduct involved - especially the deliberate non-payment of very large sums, estimated in excess of £13m of tax in the form of PAYE, NIC and VAT - was attributable to the club as a member of the Scottish FA.
"The disciplinary tribunal was correct also in holding that the maximum fine available for this breach was £100,000 and on its own was inadequate as a punishment for this misconduct. It was therefore correct to select an additional sanction.
"The sanctions available included expulsion from participation in the game and termination or suspension of membership of the Scottish FA, which would have had a similar effect.
"The appellate tribunal observes that serious consideration was given by the disciplinary tribunal to imposing one of these sanctions, which would have had obvious consequences for the survival of the club.
"The disciplinary tribunal rejected these as too severe and this appellate tribunal agrees with that conclusion.
"Although the appellate tribunal has listened carefully to the representations from Rangers FC about the practical effects of the additional sanction, it has concluded that this sanction was proportionate to the breach, dissuasive to others and effective in the context of serious misconduct, bringing the game into disrepute.
"In particular, the appellate tribunal recognises that the disciplinary tribunal decision does not affect Rangers' ability to extend the contracts of existing professional players, including those whose contracts will expire at the end of this season and including also those currently on loan to other clubs.
"The appellate tribunal observes that Rangers FC have over 40 professional players in this category."
A "dismayed" joint administrator, Paul Clark, appeared determined that Rangers will continue to battle against the transfer ban.
"The decision by the appellate tribunal to uphold the sanction, namely the suspension of registration of players for one year, is not competent in the view of the club and its legal advisers," he said.
"Such a sanction was not available to the tribunal and should not have been imposed and it is the intention of the club to challenge the determination.
"The club will consider seeking review of this most disappointing decision and it is a matter of regret that the certainty and finality Rangers sought on this matter has not been achieved."
Sandy Jardine, spokesman for the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund, added: "Rangers supporters will be shocked and bitterly disappointed by this decision and will find it hard to take that the club has been so heavily punished for the actions of individuals."
With Club Jameco, enthusiasts can pitch their kit ideas to the electronic component wizards in Belmont, CA and if a project is deemed viable for production, they'll be provided with feedback and have their idea posted for public comment. After the creation of step-by-step kit instructions, a list of materials and undergoing final approval, kits will be sold to the adoring masses. Once projects roll off production lines and into garages, creators will be paid royalties anywhere from five to ten percent based on quarterly sales. Aside from giving DIYers another sales avenue, it's also an opportunity for those who've been wary of piecing together projects to finally dive in sans the added fuss. Hankering to propose a bundle of your own? Per usual, all the particulars can be found in the source link below.
The average US smartphone owner circa mid-2012 now brandishes 41 apps, a pretty hefty 28 percent increase from a year earlier. They're preferring native apps to the web, as well: they're more likely to spend time with that direct port of Cut the Rope than the HTML5 version. Along with reminding us that smartphone owners are now in the majority in the country, Nielsen has added that there's a total of 84 million Android and iOS users in the US, or more than double what we saw just a year ago. We're a bit disappointed that the figures mostly exclude BlackBerry and Windows Phone owners, although they still paint a picture of a country that's entirely comfortable in its smartphone shoes.
A Mozilla-based browser, Kylo will work with any mouse but is designed specifically for its Freespace pointer controls. It's available under the Mozilla Public License which means others can use it for commercial products, but so far web connected products have been slow to take off and even Google TV has had trouble pushing a typical browser experience on HDTVs. Interested devs can snag the code at Kylo.tv or GitHub, we'll see if anyone builds anything with more market impact.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has lodged a formal police complaint against Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Bollywood...

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has lodged a formal police complaint against Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Bollywood superstar, following a skirmish with security guards following Knight Riders' victory over the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. The MCA will meet to discuss what action is to be taken against Shah Rukh.
Late last night, MCA officials went to the Marine Drive Police Station to lodge a police complaint against him. Shah Rukh is being accused of trying to walk onto the field of play after the game and MCA treasurer Ravi Savant told PTI that Shah Rukh had "misbehaved and abused security personnel as well as MCA officials, including our president Vilasrao Deshmukh, after the IPL match. We have decided to ban him for life from entering the stadium in future."
Savant's statements about a life ban for Shah Rukh could not be corroborated with the IPL governing council chairman Rajeev Shukla telling reporters, "I will take the version of the MCA, Shah Rukh Khan and the police before talking about the issue. The decision on the ban is taken by the Working Committee so I will speak to MCA president Vilasrao Deshmukh on this. I have to take the version of all the parties involved and then speak." MCA secretary Nitin Dalal told NDTV that Shah Rukh was "going to be banned."
Sawant told the news channel Headlines Today that Shah Rukh had tried to enter the stadium "after everything was over" and when asked to leave by the security guard Shah Rukh had "manhandled" him. It was alleged that Shah Rukh was "continuously using foul, filthy language towards officials who tried to pacify him and make him understand." An MCA member who also happened to be an assistant commissioner of police, was also seen trying to silence Shah Rukh.
Savant said all that was left at the moment was to put the proposed ban on paper and get its formalities completed, with a majority support with the MCA. He said that Shah Rukh had come to the ground well after the presentation ceremony and without any accreditation. "He had flouted all the rules", Savant said.
"Some unprovoked incident that took place, and foul language was used," Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI's chief administrative officer, said. "MCA officials are angry. We will try to find out what has happened. Definitely, the BCCI will look at what the MCA has to say."

There's been quite a bit of brouhaha over at xda-developers lately about changes HTC's made to the way multitasking behaves on the One X compared to stock Ice Cream Sandwich. We're not just talking about obvious UI differences here -- Sense 4's horizontal, card-like arrangement vs. Android 4.0's default vertical list -- but actual differences in memory and task management. While we're not running into any problems with our One X review unit, some users have noticed that background app are getting terminated too aggressively, so we reached out to HTC for comment. Here's the company's statement:

HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community's input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers' experience with our devices. That said, multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.
There you have it. HTC's definitely implemented some multitasking tweaks in Sense 4. Perhaps this is why battery life is so impressive on AT&T's One X? While we don't think it's a major issue for most users, there's always to option of installing custom ROMs now that the phone bootloader's been unlocked.

CONVENTIONAL running wisdom says that three marathons in six months is far from ideal.

But Jeff Hunt is ready and willing to give it his best shot after he and Martin Dent were added to the Australian squad for the London Olympics.
Michael Shelley was the only Australian man to better the tough Athletics Australia (AA) mark of two hours and 12 minutes inside the qualifying period.
*
But the AA selectors chose to also reward the consistency of Olympic debutants Hunt and Dent, both of whom have regularly run under the less onerous standard of 2:15:00 set by the IAAF.
*
Hunt's two most recent marathons were in Beppu-Oita, Japan, in February (2:13:19) and Hamburg (2:14:19) late last month.
With the London marathon slated for the final day of the Games on August 12, that will make it three times over the gruelling distance of 42.195km in half a year.

"It's got to be a lot of mind over matter," 29-year-old Hunt said."Just because the old boys say you've got to recover and take it easy, that doesn't mean you can't change the mould.
"I've recovered really well between Japan and Hamburg and I think I can do it again.
"It's staying on top of all the maintenance, the stretching and the exercise.
"You don't automatically lose fitness just because you have a couple of weeks of recovery.
"There's no reason why I can't run at my absolute best in London."
*
Hunt believes a time around the mark of 2:12, which he has consistently run in the past couple of years, should see him finish in the top 15 in London and maybe as high as the top five, depending on conditions.
He will be a part of a full complement of six Australian marathoners at the London Games after Dent was also added to a squad including Shelley, Lisa Weightman, Benita Willis and Jessica Trengove - all of whom bettered the AA qualifying standards.
AA also finalised its Olympic walking squad on Thursday, with Chris Erickson and Adam Rutter getting the nod over Luke Adams for the remaining two vacancies in the 20km event.
Adams will focus on the 50km race.
Jared Tallent will again double up in both walks, just as he did in Beijing four years ago when he was second in the 50km and third in the 20km race.

A number of unsealed documents from the upcoming trial between Activision and a group of ex-Infinity Ward developers have revealed a testimony that alleges the publisher launched an internal investigation against lead plaintiffs Jason West and Vince Zampella.
The documents--made public this week by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle--contain the testimony of Activision's former senior director of information technology, Thomas Fenady. As reported by Giant Bomb and The Los Angeles Times, Fenady's testimony alleges that Activision's in-house lawyer, George Rose, asked him to spy on West and Zampella by accessing their work emails, voice mails, and computer files.
According to Fenady, who left Activision in 2009, Rose told him the decision to investigate West and Zampella came from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. The testimony also alleges the objective--known as "Project Icebreaker"--was begun with the aim of building evidence against West and Zampella, but that efforts to monitor the personal correspondence of the developers, which included using outside parties, were unsuccessful.
Other documents unsealed by Judge Elihu Berle in the case include a plan documenting bonuses from West and Zampella's initial agreement in 2003, as well as a memorandum of understanding from 2008, explaining the extension of the developers' initial contract.
According to the LA Times report, the documents form part of the contract that Activision had with West and Zampella and the 40 other game developers involved in the lawsuit, laying out the money that Activision owes the developers in royalties and bonuses.
Activision claims that it fired West and Zampella because they were secretly planning to start their new studio with the help of Electronic Arts, while still employed by the Call of Duty publisher. West and Zampella claim that the real reason they were fired was so Activision wouldn't have to pay them millions of dollars in royalties associated with Modern Warfare 2. Beyond the performance-based payout and any other court-awarded monetary damages, West and Zampella are seeking to gain co-ownership of the Modern Warfare brand. If successful in court, West and Zampella would have the right to create and release both old and new instalments in the Modern Warfare franchise.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Activision has dropped the $400 million claim against EA, which originally made up part of its lawsuit against West and Zampella.
Although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, Bloomberg reported that EA will now be removed from the upcoming trial, set to take place on May 29.
