Pontus Wernbloom's last-minute volley earned a draw to keep CSKA Moscow in the hunt in their last-16 Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Real had looked set to return to Spain with a lead at the tie's halfway stage, but paid for their wastefulness.
Cristiano Ronaldo fired under Sergei Chepchugov to open the scoring but fluffed a fine 84th-minute chance.
CSKA had rarely threatened but Wernbloom crashed home with virtually the game's final kick to snatch a draw.
The hosts had hoped that the combination of an unfamiliar artificial pitch and sub-zero temperatures at the Luzhniki Stadium might unsettle a Real Madrid side who had won 27 of their last 30 matches.
It briefly looked that way as the hosts, coming to the end of a three-month domestic mid-season break, threatened the Madrid goal early on, Alan Dzagoev directing a volley narrowly wide from Georgi Schennikov's cross.
But Real, hunting a 10th European Cup but their first since 2002, soon warmed up.
Chepchugov had to be alert to tip Sami Khedira's bouncing effort up and over the bar before Ronaldo made the most of the Russian side's failure to clear Fabio Coentrao's centre with a solidly struck low shot.
Jose Callejon twice came close to adding to the Spanish league leaders' advantage, shanking a shot wide as he stretched to reach Ronaldo's through-ball before being denied by Chepchugov's outstretched boot.
CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky replaced anchorman Evgeni Aldonin with Japanese playmaker Keisuke Honda in the final quarter, but Real continued to be more dangerous in attack and Ronaldo dragged his shot as the ball rolled invitingly into his path 15 yards out.
There had been little sign of an equaliser, but in the third minute of injury time Aleksei Berezutski nodded back across the face of goal and Swede Wernbloom hammered in to give his team in a fighting chance in the second leg on 14 March.
