Difficult to say though.
I think I personally would go with John Lennon. You know he spoke out a lot against things he really didn't agree with - most obviously the Vietnam war in a time where celebs were not supposed to speak out against such things. Just 20 years previous stars would be blacklisted for their politics if considered too radical.
Today the way governments court such celebs instead can be a bit sickening - I mean Bono is treated like the second coming.
And yeah some punk stars like Johnny Rotten could perhaps be called controversial, but thats all part of the punk brand isn't it?
No John Lennon was controversial, but genuine.
