Default Northern Ireland: A return to troubled times?

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | 'Real IRA was behind army attack'

The Real IRA admit responsibility to a gun attack on British soldiers. It marks a return to violence after 12 years of peace in Northern Ireland, and has been condemned by all sides.

However whether this will see a return to violence only time will tell.

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | Arrests over NI policeman murder

In a second event, a policeman is killed by another Republican paramilitary organisation.

Whether these attacks are the beginning of a new wave of terror from the Real IRA and Continuity IRA, remains to be seen. Only time will tell.

Certainly with two such events in the last week, some form of Loyalist retaliation at this point would not be unexpected.

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | SF criticise 'Real IRA' message

The Real IRA this weekend released a statement saying it intends to continue to attack soldiers and the police.

This has been denounced by Sinn Fein leaders, who are considered traitors by the Real IRA.

A month on from a spate of murders, it's been comforting to know that the violence hasn't spilled over, and there have been no retaliations from Loyalist groups yet. But it is still sad to find violence is slowly creeping back.
