The effects of climate change have driven women in communities in coastal areas in poor countries like the Philippines into dangerous work, and...

The effects of climate change have driven women in communities in coastal areas in poor countries like the Philippines into dangerous work, and sometimes even the flesh trade, a United Nations official said.

Suneeta Mukherjee, country representative of the United Nations Food Population Fund (UNFPA), said women in the Philippines are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change in the country.

“Climate change could reduce income from farming and fishing, possibly driving some women into sex work and thereby increase HIV infection," Mukherjee said during the Wednesday launch of the UNFPA annual State of World Population Report in Pasay City.

In the Philippines, small brothels usually pop up near the coastal areas where many women perform sexual services for transient seafarers. Often, these prostitutes are ferried to bigger ships by their pimps.

Based on the UNFPA report, there are 92 million Filipinos in the country as of 2009 and that number is expected to balloon to more than 146 million in the next 40 years.

Of the 92 million Filipinos, about 60 percent are living in coastal areas and depend on the seas for livelihood, said former Environment secretary Dr. Angel Alcala.

Alcala said that “we have already exceeded the carrying capacity of our marine environment."

But as the sea’s resources are depleted due to overpopulation and overfishing, fishermen start losing their livelihood and women are forced to share the traditional role of the man in providing for the family.

Alacala, who also heads the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management in Siliman University, said some women often pick out shellfish by the coastlines, which exposed to storm surges.

Women who can no longer endure this work often go out to find other jobs, while some are tempted to go into prostitution, Alcala added.

In an interview with the Inter Press News Agency, Marita Rodriguez of the Centre for Empowerment and Resource Development, Inc. said women are taking the brunt of climate change.

"Aside from their household chores and participation in fishing activity, they have to find additional sources of income like working as domestic helpers in affluent families," she said.

The UNFPA noted that the temperature in the earth’s surface has risen 0.74 degrees Celsius in the past 100 years. The 10 warmest years globally since 1880 have also been recorded in the last 13 years.

“Slower population growth, for example, would help build social resilience to climate change’s impacts and would contribute to a reduction of greenhouse gas-emissions in the future," the UNFPA report said.

The UNFPA suggested five measures to mitigate climate change and overpopulation:

* Bring a better understanding of population dynamics, gender and reproductive health to climate change and environmental discussions at all levels;

* Fully fund family planning services and contraceptive supplies within the framework of reproductive health and rights, and assure that low income is no barrier to access;

* Prioritize research and date collection to improve the understanding of gender and population dynamics in climate change mitigation and adaptation;

* Improve sex-disaggregation of date related to migration flows that are influenced by environmental factors and prepare now for increases in population movements resulting from climate change; and

* Integrate gender considerations into global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

A recently released music video for "Popular Demand" by the Clipse featured the awning of the infamous Obama Fried Chicken joint in Brownsville, Brooklyn. But in comparing versions of the video airing on MTV and elsewhere, it looks like the TV channel completely erased the restaurant's name from the awning in the video's opening shot.

Brokelyn, the Brooklyn blog that first reported the editing, notes it could be one of three possible reasons: copyright law, MTV advertising policy, or a more political decision that keeps MTV from dealing with the repercussions "from blaring 'Obama Fried Chicken" across American TV screens."

Back in April, City Councilman Charles Barron led a protest outside the location with citizens "outraged by [the] racist connection to Barack Obama and fried chicken."

The restaurant manager fired back and said it was a tribute to the president, noting four out of five customers support the name.

We contacted MTV for comment but have yet to hear back. We will update if and when we do.

Update: A spokesperson for MTV says, "MTV did not ask for that edit to be made. Someone else other than MTV made the request." When asked who that may have been, they simply said, "We have no idea."

NOVEMBER 12--Meet Joshua Basso. The Florida man was arrested yesterday after allegedly placing a series of obscene 911 calls during which he asked a female operator about her breasts and whether she would have sex with him. When confronted by cops, Basso would not say whether he was masturbating while talking to the operator, as he claimed during the calls, according to a Tampa Police Department report. The 29-year-old rooming house resident admitted placing the calls, but "did not think he would get in trouble for calling 911." That miscalculation resulted in Basso being charged yesterday with a misdemeanor count of misusing the 911 system (he was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where the below mug shot was taken). Asked why he chose to dial 911 from among "all the numbers he could have called," Basso told police that his LG cell phone was out of minutes and he "called 911 because it was free."

A STONED driver passed a breath test but blew his cover when he talked to police about mystical dragons. Heavily bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and talk of dragons worked against Jay Danny Crawford, 22, when he was pulled over by police for a random breath test at Babinda last month.
The Cairns man returned a negative blood alcohol reading. But suspicious police then asked him to get out of his car and Crawford’s unsteadiness on his feet sparked a fresh round of inquiries, the Innisfail Magistrates’ Court was told yesterday. "They saw he was unsteady, his speech was slurred and when they asked him simple questions he took long and unusual pauses," police prosecutor Sgt Scott Moon recounted. "He began talking about mystical dragons. Crawford was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possessing a dangerous drug. Sgt Moon said police had taken a blood specimen after driving Crawford to Innisfail, but they did not have a certificate yet. But he said Crawford had admitted to officers that he had consumed two cones of hydro-cannabis. He then surrendered 0.5g of the drug, wrapped in foil. The court heard it was Crawford’s second charge in just over a year of driving under the influence of drugs, and that he had driven from Cairns to Babinda before being pulled over by police as he made his way to his girlfriend’s house. Crawford said he did not remember talking about dragons. He told Magistrate Janelle Brassington he might have spoken about the "3D movie" he saw in Cairns before getting behind the wheel and heading south. "There were no dragons in it (movie)," he said. Ms Brassington disqualified Crawford’s driver’s licence for one year and placed him on probation for the same amount of time. She described his traffic history as appalling. "(Laws came in) to recognise people who drive under the influence of drugs can be as much of a risk as drink-drivers," she said.

Chicago - A well-known bar in Chicago's Gold Coast is being accused of racism.

Some college students from St. Louis say they were barred from going in and they're not buying the reason they got.

This is about a senior trip for nearly 200 students from Washington University in St. Louis.

Trip organizers are angry at the treatment they got at Mother’s on Division.

Six African-American men in the group were denied entry to the bar last weekend.

Student Regis Nurayi says the bar's manager told them their jeans were too baggy.

But Murayi didn't buy it.

So he switched jeans with a shorter, white student.

The white student, who now had very baggy jeans, was let in, and Murayi was still kept out. I bet that was a funny site. :clown:

The students held a protest in front of Mother's last Sunday, and there's a meeting about this issue in St. Louis on Monday.

The students are considering a lawsuit.
