Bills fire Jauron after dismal 3-6 start
By Jason La Canfora | NFL Network

The Buffalo Bills have fired coach Dick Jauron after directing the team to a 3-6 record.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is expected to become the Bills' interim head coach, a Bills source told NFL.com's Vic Carucci.

"I am announcing today that I am relieving Dick Jauron from his duties as our head coach, effective immediately," Bills owner Ralph Wilson said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for Dick and thank him for all of his efforts during these past four years. While this was a very difficult decision, I felt that it is one that needed to be made at this time for the best interest of our team. We will now focus on moving forward and preparing for our game this week in Jacksonville."

Paul Spinelli / Associated Press
Dick Jauron couldn't help the Bills end their long playoff drought.

In just short of four seasons with the Bills, Jauron compiled a 24-33 record and failed to lead Buffalo to the playoffs. The Bills have not made the playoffs since 1999, tied with the Lions for the longest active streak for a non-expansion team.

Jauron is the first head coach fired in the middle of the season by the Bills since 1986 when Hank Bullough was fired after nine games with a 2-7 record. Bullough was replaced by former Chiefs head coach Marv Levy, who eventually led Buffalo to four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990-93.

The Bills represented Jauron's third stint as a head coach in the NFL. Jauron served as head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1999-2003, and then as interim head coach of the Detroit Lions for the final five games of the 2005 season. Jauron's overall coaching record is 60-82, the higlight of his career coming in 2001 when his Bears finished 13-3 and claimed its first division championship since 1990.

On Monday, defensive end Aaron Schobel questioned the Bills' lack of direction with seven games remaining in their season.

"It's embarrassing," said Schobel, the longest-tenured player on the Bills roster, a day after a 41-17 loss at Tennessee. "I mean, we're technically, mathematically still in it, I guess, but it's like what ... are we doing here?"

Speaking within earshot of several Bills officials near the entrance of the locker room, Schobel expressed his frustration but stopped short in explaining what he thinks the franchise's problems are by saying: "That's about all I can say without saying what I want to say."

Receiver Terrell Owens was also upset following the latest loss during which he had an animated exchange with several coaches on the sideline.

Brock Lesnar -- the UFC Heavyweight Champ -- is in "bad shape" according to UFC president Dana White and won't be fighting anytime soon.

White made the announcement after UFC 105 last night, saying "He's in a hospital up in North Dakota somewhere right now. He went to Canada and some bad stuff happened to him, so we've got to figure it out ... He doesn't want to talk about it publicly, but he's in bad shape. He's not well and he's not going to be getting well anytime soon."

Lesnar originally pulled out of a November 18 fight and reports suggested he had swine flu. The fight was rescheduled for January 2, but then it was announced Lesnar had mononucleosis.

But White made it clear, Lesnar's problems go beyond mono: "He is not good. He is very, very sick and he's going to be out for a while."

Middle-finger fine surely is coming for Bud Adams

Posted by Mike Florio on November 16, 2009 8:36 AM ET
As Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean pointed out on Sunday, Titans owner Bud Adams capped his team's 41-17 win over the Bills by shooting a couple of middle fingers in the direction of the Buffalo sideline. (Or maybe he saw Floyd Reese's wife sitting in the stands on the other side of the stadium.)

Here's the video of the moment.

Code:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTxHuUGG_2c

Sure, it's funny to see an 86-year-old man paying homage to the New York state bird. Indeed, we like the idea that, if the Guy Upstairs lets us live that long, we might still have enough passion to fire off a periodic obscene gesture at someone other than the kid on our lawn.

But the league office needs to treat this no differently than it would treat a player who has done the same thing. In past years, Jake Plummer was fined $5,000 for shooting a one-fingered salute at the crowd, and kicker Joe Nedney more recently was slapped with a $7,500 penalty for the same thing.

And who can forget Mike Vick's heartwarming gesture to folks at the Georgia Dome who were jeering him after a subpar performance in 2006? Vick was slapped with a $10,000 fine, and he donated another $10,000 to charity.

The league arguably could distinguish Adams' situation by taking the position that he was directing the message not to the paying customers but to the opponents. Even that would be a stretch, however. At a time when there's already a perception that the league treats players differently than non-players when it comes to the imposition of discipline, Adams should be asked to write a check in the amount of $10,000.

Heck, he'd probably say it was worth it. And given the "cred" that it has given him with football fans, he might even do it again.

Three freshman players that were part of Lane Kiffin's first recruiting class have been charged with attempted armed robbery in Knoxville.

Janzen Jackson, Mike Edwards and Nu'Keese Richardson are accused of trying to rob three men sitting in a car outside a convenience store. The three men described the scene in which two males in black-hooded sweatshirts approached their car and asked them for money. The two then fled in a 2010 Toyota Prius.

According to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk, police pulled over the car and found Edwards, Richardson and Jackson inside. The car was driven by Marie Montmarquet, DeBusk said.

A search of the Prius revealed a air-powered pellet pistol under the rear seat. Two black hoodies were seen in plain view in the back seat, DeBusk said.

In the car's glove box police found a marijuana grinder. Police found a clear plastic bag of suspected marijuana in Montmarquet's jacket pocket, DeBusk said.

Montmarquet told police the pot grinder and pot found in her jacket belonged to her, DeBusk said. She was charged with simple possession of pot and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton released a statement Thursday morning about the episode.

"At this time we are currently evaluating the circumstances surrounding an incident involving Mike Edwards, Janzen Jackson and Nu'Keese Richardson," Hamilton said. "Any decisions or comments regarding their status will not be made until the evaluations are complete."

All three players have seen action as true freshman. Jackson has started seven games at safety and is sixth on the team with 33 tackles. Richardson is the player that was part of coach Lane Kiffin's accusation that Florida coach Urban Meyer cheating in recruiting. Kiffin was reprimanded and it was determined Meyer did not break any rules.

LOS ANGELES — Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and a photographer are being investigated for misdemeanor battery after an airport...

LOS ANGELES — Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and a photographer are being investigated for misdemeanor battery after an airport scuffle that injured the paparazzo, police said Thursday.

Tyson and Tony Echeverria, 50, made citizens' arrests of each other after a confrontation at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport, airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb.

Police were called and they were fingerprinted and photographed, then released without bail, Holcomb said. The city attorney will decide whether to file criminal charges.

Echeverria, who described himself as a freelance photographer, told police that Tyson struck him once. The photographer fell to the ground and was treated for a cut to his forehead at a hospital.

Tyson had stopped at LAX while traveling from Europe to Las Vegas when several photographers began snapping him near a ticket counter, Holcomb said.

Tyson's spokeswoman Tammy Brook said the boxer was traveling with his wife and 10-month-old child when he was attacked by an overly aggressive paparazzo.

"Mike acted in self defense as a father protecting his child," she said.

Echeverria's camera was booked as evidence and police also were checking if there was any surveillance video of the incident.

Tyson was cooperative as he waited in a holding cell at the airport police station, Holcomb said. Echevarria was treated at a hospital while Tyson continued his trip, Holcomb said.

Holcomb said both men were released without any restrictions and free to go wherever they want.

Paparazzi often camp out at Los Angeles' largest airport to get shots of celebrities in transit.

Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in 1986 when he won his title as a 20-year-old. But his life since then has been marred by accusations of domestic violence, rape and cocaine use.

Tyson was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992 and served three years in prison. He was disqualified from a 1997 heavyweight title fight when he bit off part of Evander Holyfield's right ear, and in 1999 he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland.

In 2003, Tyson filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. He served 24 hours in an Arizona jail in 2007 after pleading guilty to cocaine possession and driving under the influence.

NBA great Abdul-Jabbar has rare form of leukemia
By BEN WALKER, AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is being treated for a rare form of leukemia, and the basketball great said his prognosis is encouraging.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer was diagnosed last December with chronic myeloid leukemia, he told The Associated Press on Monday.

The 62-year-old Abdul-Jabbar said his doctor didn’t give any guarantees, but informed him: “You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.”

Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication for the disease. He is a paid spokesman for the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, which makes a drug that treats the illness.

Citing the way Los Angeles Lakers teammate Magic Johnson brought awareness to HIV, Abdul-Jabbar said he wants to do the same for his form of blood cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated.

“I’ve never been a person to share my private life. But I can help save lives,” he said at a midtown Manhattan conference room. “It’s incumbent on someone like me to talk about this.”

Abdul-Jabbar became concerned last year after feeling odd sensations. He went for tests at UCLA, where he dominated college basketball in the late 1960s, winning three straight NCAA championships from 1967-69.

“I was getting hot flashes and sweats on a regular basis,” he said. “That’s not normal, even for my age.”

An exam showed his white blood cell count was “sky high” and a doctor quickly diagnosed his condition. At first, all Abdul-Jabbar heard was the word “leukemia.”

“I was scared,” he said. “I thought it was all the same. I thought it could mean I have a month to live.”

“That was my first question,” he said. “Was I going to make it?”

A longtime student in martial arts, Abdul-Jabbar said he took the approach of a samurai, to face death without fear.

“I had my face on,” he said.

Instead, doctors told him CML was treatable with proper medication and monitoring.

Abdul-Jabbar is a special assistant with the Lakers and said he hasn’t had to cut back his level of activity of coaching, change his regimen or adjust his diet. “I’m able to sneak out for Thai food,” he said.

“There is hope. This condition can be treated. You can still live a productive, full life,” he said. “I’m living proof I can make it.”

Abdul-Jabbar recently returned from an academic conference in Abu Dhabi and has several speaking engagements planned. Among the people he regularly talks to about his condition is his son, a third-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco.

The six-time NBA MVP intends to post updates to his Facebook and Twitter accounts and stay connected through CML Earth, a Web site for those afflicted by the disease.

About 5,000 cases of CML are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said. More than 22,000 people are living in the US with the disease.

The disease tends to initially be diagnosed by people in their mid-to-late 60s, and usually affects men more than women.

“I want to spread the word,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

The Kansas City Chiefs released RB Larry Johnson on Monday. In 75 games (55 starts) with Kansas City, Johnson rushed 1,375 times for 5,996 yards (4.4 avg.) with 55 touchdowns. He also registered 151 receptions for 1,369 yards (9.1 avg.) with six TDs. He concluded his Chiefs career with 30 100-yard rushing games and also added two 100-yard receiving games.

Johnson established an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006 when he set a franchise single-season mark with 1,789 rushing yards. He originally entered the league as the Chiefs first-round selection (27th overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft out of Penn State.

As Tony goes, so will Dallas. He has played well the last 4 weeks and Dallas is winning.

The emergence of Miles Austin has also helped.

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was defiant Thursday, saying that discussions about why wide receiver Roy Williams has such low numbers will not divide his team.

Williams has only 14 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns heading into the Cowboys' game at Philadelphia Sunday night.

Tony Romo had a chance to sound off, but he took the high road Thursday. ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon details the QB's mood.

Williams said Wednesday that Romo throws better passes to the team's other receivers, and he can't figure out why.

Romo said the two are working hard in practices, even doing extra work, but for whatever reason, the chemistry is not there.

"I don't look at the numbers," Romo said before Thursday's practice at Valley Ranch. "We've been through this before with people trying to intersect and divide a football team. This team is too strong from the core.

"I know the media is going to make certain things appear what they may not actually have been or things of that nature. This team is too committed to winning and too committed to improving to let anything like that or anything [the media] may present to us divide this team."

For the past two days, Williams has discussed his lack of a connection with Romo. He said Thursday that he was getting tired of talking about it.

Romo has completed less than 40 percent of his passes to Williams, which is a smaller percentage than Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin and tight end Jason Witten.

"I didn't complain," Williams said. "I didn't complain that I didn't get the ball. I got seven opportunities in [last Sunday's win over Seattle]. All I said was that, when it comes to me, it's not there. The percentages ... back my case. I'm not saying it can't be fixed because that's what we do every day. We try to work on it and get it fixed.

"I'm not a T.O. [Terrell Owens] or I'm not trying to be a T.O. I don't know why people are trying to put me in that category because I'm happy to win. I've said that 100 times."
