Assalamu alaikum!
Please note, this is not a debate topic on weather God exists or if Mohammad (pbuh) is really a prophet. This is about being a Muslim, and the lifestyle which comes with it. If you dont think its a lifestyle, do what we do for a couple days and then tell me that.
Some FAQ - Dont be afraid to post! But please, be polite as religion is a very sensitive issue :>
* Why are Muslims crazy terrorists?
We're not, hate has no religion. Any terrorists who say they are killing for the sake of Allah are very misguided. Normal Muslims are not taught to hate. Some Muslims do not approve of the West, and need people to carry out their dirty deeds.
They groom kids, the ones that crave to be accepted, from a young age poisoning their mind with lies. Think of it like a cult. For every religion, there is probably some crazy people making it look bad. Eg, Shirley Phelps and those crazies for Christianity.
* Are Muslim women who wear head scarves oppressed?
In the West, Muslim women are not required to wear the hijab. It's all about modesty, if you feel you dress modestly, then that will suffice. Some women DO wear Hijabs, they are Hijabis. And it is of choice. Often they feel empowered when wearing it, it is something to be proud of!
In the Middle East, some countries force ALL women to wear a headscarf. I do not agree with it, yet since i live in America, nothing i can really do about it...
- Also, some women wear Burkas or Jilbabs, these cover from head to toe. They are also for the sake of modesty, also optional. -
Why do you put acronyms by Allah and Jesus, and Mohammad's name?
Someone has asked me this via PM and i am quite glad they asked. Muslims, when typing or writing, often put acronyms to show respect to the prophets and more glory to Allah. Not ALL Muslims do this, but some (including me and most people in this thread) do type it.
PBUH or SAWS: PBUH is 'peace be upon him', SAWS is 'sallalahu aleyhi wa sellim'
They both mean the same thing, and are used after the Prophets names. A lot of people also SAY these phrases when speaking.
SWT: This is used when speaking of Allah, it stands for 'Subhana wa t'ala' which is Arabic for 'Glorified and Exalted is He'
When do Muslims pray? And what are the names?
Prayer is performed five times a day:
Dawn - Fajr
Noon - Dhuhr
Afternoon - Asr
Sunset - Maghrib
Nightfall - Isha'a
And we go to Mosque whenever really, but mainly on Fridays.
The Mutawwa would beat you to a bloody mess. They don't mind giving a woman a beat down. They might beat a baby if it broke the law.
Have you ever ate bacon or ham?
I googled Shirley Phelps and was freaked out. I bet they was the ones protesting at the soldiers graves in Arlington.
Why would the 'Mutawwa' give you a beatdown? They don't mind giving woman a beat down? That's steretoyping...That's like saying all whites are racists and look down upon the minorities, which is not true..and beat a baby if it broke the law? Haha, you've got some wild accusations that's so outrages. KKK? no?
Assalamu alaikum!
I'm not a Muslim but I understand what you are saying about the choice of modesty. When I was younger I was in a "holiness" church where the women could not cut their hair or wear pants and the men couldn't wear short sleeves. No TV or any music except "gospel music" and many other "don't do's". But it was their own "choice" to be there.
I've grown spiritually a lot since then and I've studied many religions. And what I've discovered is that basically all religions are the same. They are a way to contact your version of the Creator. You'll notice that we of the western religions have our own "practice" of always capitalizing the name of God out of respect. (kind of our own version of PBUH or SWT)
And my belief is that if a person does really believe in God that they would always do their best to do what they believe He would do in the same situation. (which is religion in a nutshell)
I like to treat religious texts as interesting history with a good moral lesson. And religious ceremonies as mainly for the purpose of bringing people together in harmony. And prayer is simply being yourself as a spiritual being communicating with the Creator which is also a spiritual being.

Reason: something else
Zen_ish, I appreciate your comment. Although we are of different religions, we have the same concept, a concept which Ken seems to have trouble understanding. No religion urges to start a war, but rather to live in peace with one another. The problem is, when you here about terrorist attacks, and is done by a group of people who happen to be muslims, the world labels Islam as a religion/culture/society created and destined to destroy the world. I feel upset as this is a major stereotyping issue. In your opinion, how can we implant the right image of Islam that has been distorted by the media and such?

Don't worry about Ken... he's a good guy but he's just the kind of guy that fires a shot over the bow and then asks "who goes there?".
I think that generally speaking that religions are known for their good works and their attitude of peace and serenity. Everybody knows someone that they automatically think of as a good and peaceful person. So we should just all strive for the thought process of understanding and allowing other people to be different than we are.
The Buddha said, "The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind".

Mutawwa was like redneck police in SA. It might have changed in the last 14 years. I think they had them in Egypt too, but my memory isn't too good. They wasn't the normal police who wore b.d.u.s. The common man was the same as here, some good some not. I remember women couldn't drive, not even our nurses. It helped me get lucky. I've seen so much bad from religion pushers that I am very better. It can be summed up like this, "I'm right, my religion says so, now give me my way".
Here comes the big shocker, they only place a man could get a beer was in Israel! The Jews looked down on everyone who wasn't a jew. The lowest in their eyes was christians and it was a huge rebellion for a jewish girl to date a christian. And them girls liked to rebel.
I do have a question, here in the states do they sing its time to come and pray like in the M.E.?
