Should a man have a say on the abortion of his child? I believe that the father of the child should have a say. For one, it's not just the woman's child, it is also his. Just because it is not currently inside his body, doesn't mean it is any less child. Once it is born, he will be expected to take care of it equally with the woman, so why should he have less authority on its life now?
For one, it is possible that the woman deceived the man into getting her pregnant (lying about being on birth control pills, putting a hole in the condom, raping the man, etc.). Now the man will have no choice but to support a child he did not want to have in the first place.
Flip that situation around, a woman was raped by a man (or say, lied about having a vasectomy) and the woman became pregnant. She would be able to abort. But in the opposite situation, the man has no rights.
And let's say that a couple decides to have a child. But when the women truly realizes that she is pregnant, she changes her mind and wants an abortion. She could make this decision, without any approval from the father. Really think this through: she could kill the father's future child without him having any say at all, just because it happens to be in her body.
If women want true equality, they not only have to fight for their rights, they have to fight for men's too. |
