    Default Diablo III

    anyone interested in this game?

    IGN: Diablo III

im gonna miss the necromancer, maybe i'll be happy with the witch-doctor. either way if this game is only half as good as diablo II it will still be a must-have.

plus blizzard has a pretty decent track record, so it should be better than good.

I don't know. Its been what like 8 or 9 years since Diablo 2. I'm afraid that unless they do something amazing with it, only die-hard fans of the series will want to pick it up. I'm not really a fan of the series, but the first Diablo was an amazing game, not to mention the first game I bought, and Diablo 2 didn't even compete in my eyes. Also, I don't know if you heard but Blizzard is bringing back another big-hitter, Starcraft, with Starcraft 2, which is also supposed to be released later this year.

i dont know if starcraft 2 will be as big as diablo, and i highly doubt time is a factor. it was nearly 10 years between metal gear solid and ps and the one before was on nes, and that game is always in the 10 top of ps game lists. they can always rope in new players. plus blizzard marketed WoW. i think if they can sell a game that you have to pay $15 every month to people they can sell a game that you pay for once.

The reason I mentioned the time factor is because from what I've seen from released screenshots, gameplay videos, etc., the gameplay and the graphics will be about the same as it was before. (Actually, the graphics are updated a little) That's good for the big fans of the series, but again, not a lot of people are going to want to play a new game with dated graphics and gameplay.

MGS made a huge jump console wise, going from the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System to the 32-bit Playstation console. The graphics were highly upgraded and the gameplay was a style that was still new to the gaming industry. So while it was a sequel, the game was changed so much from the original, with the only things that came back were the characters, and the fans and non-fans loved it. My whole point is that if Diablo 3 makes some major changes then it might be highly regarded by fans and non-fans alike. Otherwise, I have a feeling this will be a game solely for the fans of the first 2.

As far as WoW goes, there really wasn't a whole lot of MMORPGs to choose from back when it was released and there still isn't a big second choice floating around (If you're thinking of City of Heroes and Star Wars Galaxies, they do have significant subscribers, but they still don't even compare to WoW in sales), so it stands alone as the biggest one out there. Diablo 3 is an action RPG that is going into a market with other big RPG's (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fable 2) and I highly doubt it will surpass any of those titles in sales.

Actually, I'll go ahead and compare this series to that of Fallout. Look at the first 2 Fallout games and then look at the new one. Significant changes in every aspect and highly regarded by everyone. The look at the first 2 Diablo games, and then look at the new one. Not a big change anywhere.

Diablo 3 will sell simply because the fan base. However, non-fans may turn away from the series because of the dated gameplay and graphics. The same thing goes for Starcraft 2. I enjoyed the first 2, so I will pick it up just to see where they go with the story.

not to start a debate or anything but you cant really comment on diablo's gameplay.....unless you work for blizzard and have played the final version. just cause it shares the above camera angle doesnt mean it will play the same.

also your logic seems slightly flawed. if the game is alot like the previous one and only the previous fans will buy it why are sequels such big money? didnt diablo II outsell diablo, halo got bigger than halo 2. i could list tons of games that followed that trend. sure some start to stink after a few games, but those game companies produced medicore games already. blizzard really tries to put out only very good games, they dont rush things to the shelves too often.

i think youre being to harsh on the game series. diablo III could very well be like resident evil 3 and just more of the same, but it could also be like resident evil 4 and a whole new beginning for the gameplay of a genre.

and there was everquest before WoW, and blizzard marketed WoW in such a way to sell it to people that never played a game like that before. so they have a track record of marketing games very, very well. i think they are gonna put the same amount of marketing behind diablo III, and starcraft 2. so whether or not if youve played diablo before, blizzard is gonna make you interested in playing it, thats what they do.

then after you played it there goes your social life........i hate blizzard!

I can see where you are coming from. Just because it is a sequel, it doesn't mean it still won't be a gem. I guess I am a little hesitant about Diablo 3 because of the way the Fallout series played out. The first 2 were about the same and then you come back years later with Fallout 3 and its a whole different thing entirely, and it was a great game...actually it was like Oblivion and Fallout 2 mixed...but anyway like you said, sequels that are kinda the same do sell. (Halo, Fable, MADDEN)

I mean I love Halo (obviously) and I played all 3 games. They are in fact very similar in the way they play and they just got better with each installment. Diablo 3 could be along those same lines, being actually better than its predecessor. I mean who knows, Diablo 3 could be the greatest video game of the century...but from what I have seen so far, basically I was saying I don't have high expectations. The last game I had high expectations for was The Force Unleashed and look how that turned out.

So I wasn't trying to say that all sequels turn out bad or anything like that and I wasn't trying to slam the Diablo series or Blizzard either, I was simply stating my deduction, based on what I know, on how the game will do. It's not like I'm writing an official review for G4 or something. And who knows, maybe I do work at Blizzard...
