I've played the first one. I didn't really find it any fun at all. I am a big fan of roleplaying games and I played a game similar to .hack, Xenosaga, and found it to be much more entertaining. .hack may be an acquired taste, but it just left me kinda empty. If you are looking for some great JRPG's on the Playstation 2 console, check out Xenosaga: Episode 1, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, and the ever-popular Final Fantasy series - X and XII to be specific.

Is it because Xenasaga, Shin Megami, etc are less All There In the Manual-type games or is the gameplay just better?

I loved the gameplay and the storyline for all of the games I mentioned. .hack didn't really capture me into the game like I expected it to. So, yeah, the gameplay is better, IMO.

.hack gameplay is sort of like a V.1 version of FF12 gameplay, or maybe Kingdom Hearts. Except, in .hack it's less like fun and more like a monkey humping a football.

Some of the characters were cool. And I like the whole concept of a game within a game. Like, you can get Emails from the other characters as if they were a real person, playing along with you; "Meet me at this place as soon as you can..." That kind of thing. But there are so many real MMOs these days. Why would anyone want to play an MMO simulator?

The story is just convoluted. Lets go back to that monkey humping his football. Seems like that same monkey was head writer.

You're better of with Final Fantasy 12, or Xenosaga, like disturbed said. Or, if you have a 360, check out Lost Oddessy. That game kind of reminds me of FF7, without being a complete rip off.

Thanks - I've saved myself quite the investment, I think.
