9 Review OK I saw Tim Burton's "9" a couple days ago and here is my take / review of it with minimal plot spoilers and by that I mean that this review contains plot that you could piece together from simply watching the trailer. However if you want Zero Plot spoilers stop reading as my issues with this movie can not be explained without the little i have here:
This movie was decent. The story begins with Nine being built and takes off with him waking up in a broken and destroyed world. From here the movie moves quite quickly through the story of him discovering others like hm, a great beast that takes people away, and Nine trying to be a hero.
Now while I will admit the "in movie story" is ok, the animation is amazing, and the voice acting is fairly well done everything seems quite rushed once you start to learn about the world's history. We find out that human's built a machine of AI intelligence that built more machines (That conveniently look like the designs were stolen from War of the Worlds) around the time period of World War I. OK I can live with that being a sci-fi geek. Yet this seemingly believable world begins to unravel around 3/4ths of the way through the film.
Around this time the major plot is revealed about humanity and the relationship surrounding the AI which at first seems very cookie cutter of man builds machine, machine learns war through humans, and then turns on them. However this plot and a world built on science gets turned upside down and inside out when the movie introduces a curious machine that has alchemic / magical properties of transferring the souls and knowledge of living beings into inanimate objects and not only making that object more powerful but also giving it all the knowledge and attributes of the one it is used on.
This jump comes without warning and without any explanation and only gets worse from there. After this part the rest of the film is a battle between Nine and his companions and the machine and characters that were set up to be able to fight don't and those that have been cowardly suddenly leap to the front lines to help out.
The ending however is where this movie truly fails. I will not reveal all the details of what is entailed but needless to say that even if you could stomach the sudden change from science to magic you will not be able to find the ending satisfying. This is because by the time you reach the ending you as a viewer are not informed of anything that the characters seem to instinctively know about what is happening and we get even more magical stuff as rain comes down mixed with a particular item hitting the ground. This ending leaves the movie without any true resolution and leaves the audience feeling like there was a lot missing from the film.
Overall this move is ok for a watch, don't expect anything to make a lot of sense as everything that is set up is thrown out for new stuff by the end. The entire story seems to be half assed while the animation and graphics are excellent this has an all to familiar feel of Tim Burton making a strange film that make no sense and promoting them based solely on his name while the actual film is utter crap. Ever since Nightmare Before Christmas he has released a steady string of crazed and unusual films that are dumb and make no sense cough cough Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake cough cough.
Anyway I would recommend this film as a rent from netfix but I would not try going out to blockbuster to rent it as it will just end up disappointing you.
If you want to see a film I would recommend Gamer over this as at least that one has a storyline, sticks to it, and is at least a decent one time watch though even that one I would recommend as a rent. |
