I listen a lot to a cd by a 70s country rock band The New Riders of the Purple Sage. The album is The Adentures is Panama Red. I haven't run into anybody else who has heard of them yet.
Also although people know who Frank Zappa is they never recognize his music.

New Riders of the Purple Sage. Yeah, they do free concerts around here once a year or so. I've seen them a couple of times.
Falling Up is a band that just released their fourth album called Fangs. There's this whole background story about a guy traveling to Neptune to find out who poisoned the villiage children's clothes, and the songs are about his adventures. The songs are pretty abstract, but the band is really good.

Oh wow I'm surprised to see a Sigur Ros fan in here! () is an amazing album.
The one band that is my absolute favorite but very few around here have heard of is Dream Theater. Along with Metallica, they're my favorite band. I met the guys two years ago at a meet and greet and they're all really nice guys. The drummer is especially social, he made me feel welcome. Check out Images And Words, it's easily their best album.
Lordi. I guess few Americans listen to Finnish metal. Gotta love their style and music videos, though.

Lordi's another good one. I saw them at Ozzfest, they put on a good show.
Another band not many around me like are Lacuna Coil. Cristina Scabbia has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
I've been listening a lot to katie kerkhover! i don't think many people know her. if anyone wants a free download, go to maxravestores.com! oh fyi, she does rock/pop music.
Government Mule. Started listening to them several years ago. Thanks XM. Starting to hear them more and more.
absolutely love pepper! anyone heard of the expendables? there both more reggae or "dub" i guess its called. like sublime. or corey smith? Hes more of a Acustic, country, Rock, funnier version of Jack Johnson.
The Expendables-Sacrafice-CHECK IT!
Peppers-Ashes. not there video but good version of the song.

I listen to a fair amount of metal from Europe, so many people I know never heard Nightwish, Delain, Sonic Syndicate, Poets of the Fall, etc.
Sigur Rós appeals to me too, as one of their albums, Odin's Raven Magic, was obviously inspired by the Norse Mythology, a subject I have both a profound interest in and knowledge of. A band I like to listen to is Manowar, also heavily influenced by the Norse Pantheon.

This song is called Sons of Odin.
And while I know they might not be as obscure or unknown as some of the others mentioned here, there are some rather unique aspects to them. Their base guitarist does all their arrangements and is a composer and conductor with a degree from Juillard. How often have you ever seen a person with that background in a heavy metal band?

Hymn of the Immortal Warrior.
Life without meaning cannot be borne.
We find a mission to which we're sworn
- or answer the call of Death's dark horn.
Without a gleaning of purpose in life,
we have no vision, we live in strife,
- or let blood fall on a suicide knife.
