Oh Crumbs! Pensioner Fined For Feeding Pigeons

A STUNNED pensioner was fined £50 for feeding sandwich crumbs to pigeons.

Beryl Withers told how two council wardens pounced after she emptied the tiny morsels from her bag on to the ground after finishing her lunch.

They told her she had broken litter laws and demanded her name and address. The 81-year-old widow was gobsmacked when she got a £50 fine in the post and was warned she could have been hit with a £2,000 penalty.

Beryl, of Nottingham, said: "I was so cross. All I did was empty the crumbs of my sandwich bag. Straight away around half a dozen birds appeared and started pecking them off the floor.


"Then these two yellow coats appeared and said, 'That's a £2,000 fine'. I have never put a foot wrong in all my days. I am outraged."


But yesterday, Nottingham city council stood by the fine.


Spokesman Brian Grocock said: "Dropping food waste, even if to feed pigeons, represents a real health risk. It attracts rats."
