NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Titans quarterback Steve McNair has been killed. Police said McNair suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville.

The incident happened near 2nd South & Lea Ave. Police said it looked like a double homicide. A female victim was also found dead.

In the wake of former Tennessee Titans three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Steve McNair's death in a Nashville shooting, the Tennessee Titans have issued a statement.

Titans owner Bud Adams offered his reaction to McNair's passing.

Adams had known McNair going all the way back to the Titans/Oilers drafting McNair out of Alcorn State (Miss.) in 1995.

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Adams said. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans.

"He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."


Female Victim With McNair 'Tentatively Identified'

While the NFL world tries to catch its breath after hearing the shocking news of Steve McNair's death, further information surrounding the shooting is slowly trickling out.

Nashville Public Information Officer Don Aaron spoke to the media Saturday afternoon.

"We received a call of persons injured inside one of the condominiums. When police officers arrived in response to that call, we found two individuals that had been shot to death inside the residence: one female, one male. We now know that the male deceased is Steve McNair."

The female has been "tentatively identified." Once that identity is confirmed, they will notify her next of kin.

Local reports identifying the female victim were retracted quickly. WKRN-TV reports that the calls to police went out at 1:30 PM.

Aaron did not give many other details. He said the police didn't yet know the circumstances around the deaths, who was responsible, or when the deaths occurred.

No one is in custody in relation to the deaths.

Some people who were around the condo complex were taken to police headquarters for questioning to "see what they know, what they may have seen."

While the news that Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair has died has Nashville in a state of shock, NashvillePost.com has gathered new information that sheds a different light on his untimely death.

McNair, 36, and an unnamed woman, were found dead Saturday in downtown Nashville.

The pair died of apparent gunshots wounds and were found in a condominium at 2nd and Lea Avenues in Rutledge Hill. The woman, sources say, was approximately 20 years of age.

While Metro Police has reported that details are sketchy, NashvillePost.com sources say that at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning, McNair was celebrating the holiday weekend at the Blue Moon Restaurant near the John C. Tune Airport.

According to the same NashvillePost.com sources, a white woman in her early 20s, around 5-foot-4, approached McNair at the restaurant and accused him of slipping her a “roofie” a year ago.

The woman then told McNair, according to sources, that her boyfriend was going to kill him.

Roofie is a slang term for Rohypnol, a sedative dating back to the early 1970s that is used in hospitals for deep sedation, but is now a fairly infamous date-rape drug.

Multiple sources have confirmed that this information has been shared with the Metro Police Department. Metro Police has yet to identify the dead woman, but is it unknown if the woman at the restaurant is the same woman found in the condo.
