1990 No. 1 overall pick Jeff George wants to play again in the NFL 1990 No. 1 overall pick Jeff George wants to play again in the NFL
If your team needs a quarterback, there's a former No. 1 overall draft pick available. And he's eager to find a job.
Trouble is, he was the first overall pick in 1990, Jeff George.
The quarterback, 41, has renewed his effort to get back into the NFL.
"I feel like I can still play, and if there's someone out there to give me a shot, that would be wonderful," George said to IlliniHQ.com.
"You look throughout the league, you see 20 teams that need quarterbacks – 20 teams need starters – and probably everybody needs a backup. In my opinion, there's just not a lot of quality quarterbacks out there these days."
George hasn't played in the NFL since 2001 for the Redskins, although he spent a few seasons thereafter on the rosters of the Seahawks and Bears.
He said in November that he wanted back into the league last season, but he never found a suitor.
University of Illinois coach Ron Zook has seen George throw, and doesn't think it's far-fetched for the quarterback to get back into the league.
"I coached against him when I was in the National Football League, and he was out there just throwing the ball around and I was like, 'Holy smokes.' He looked like he did when I coached against him," Zook told IlliniHQ.com.
"He was throwing the ball on the money. He can throw all the balls. He looks about 25 years old, and I was very impressed with where he is right now.
