NFL_pierce1_250.jpgOne day after clamming up regarding Antonio Pierce's legal future, the District Attorney's office in New York City has confirmed they are planning to seek gun possession charges against Pierce.
And the charges are identical to those with which Plaxio Burress is charged: Felony gun possession, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 3.5 years in, as New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg calls it, the "slammer."
The news comes as a major surprise, since it was believed previously Pierce would not face criminal charges for his involvement in Plaxico Burress' famous sweatpants shooting incident.
"It's our position Antonio committed no crime whatsoever, and had no way of knowing that the weapon was anything other than properly licensed," Pierce's lawyer Michael Bachner told the New York Post.
"Antonio acted bravely and responsibly to save what he thought could have been his teammate's life by driving him to the hospital."
Mr. Florio points out, via text from his flaming jalopy, that the threat of indicting Pierce could be an effort to get him to cooperate with police.
If that's the case, it could be a fascinating test of Pierce's loyalty and friendship with Burress. Is that friendship worth jeopardizing Pierce's career more than it already has?
If Pierce is indicted, his fate will be decided by the same grand jury that hears Burress' case. The Post comments that Pierce's status for the upcoming season could be at risk, since he would be facing jail time.
