Default Vernon Forrest, Champion Boxer, Killed in Attempted Car Jacking

To be sure, a lot of people who drive Jaguars have been the target of a car jacking throughout the years. It's a stylish, high-end automobile that could bring a crook a pretty penny on the secondary market. According to WSB Radio, someone who drives a Jaguar was the target of an attempted

car jacking in Northwest Atlanta last night and things went terribly wrong - he ended up being murdered, in fact. That someone was former boxing champion and 1992 U.S. Olympic team member Vernon Forrest. He was shot multiple times with a semiautomatic weapon. Vernon Forrest was 38-years-old.

In an interview with WSB, Lt. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta police department said that Vernon Forrest was filling his tires up with air at a gas station on Saturday night when, according to investigators, at least two thugs leaped out of a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo and attempted to steal Vernon Forrest's car. But Vernon Forrest had a gun and he was not shy about using it. A firefight broke out, and, when it was all over, Vernon Forrest lay dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

On the one hand, one has to give credit to Vernon Forrest for standing up to these criminals and for attempting to protect his property. Had things gone differently, we would be reading a story of heroism and courage this morning instead of an obituary.

On the other hand, law enforcement professionals are constantly cautioning the public against resisting an armed robber. It's too risky, they argue. One's life is infinitely more valuable than any piece of property could possibly be - no matter how pricey it is or how much sentimental value attaches to it. More often than not, it seems, victims who resist armed robbers end up dead.

One could be forgiven for believing that members of Vernon Forrest's family could not agree more with the position of law enforcement professionals on the matter of resisting armed robbers .
