Never really ran much. Does it have a option to not reboot on errors like you can with XP.

Are you doing the same thing when it happends? It could be a bad file or program.

This help?

Try another account. If that works, then your normal account's profile is buggered. Possibly due to spyware / virus.

If another account does not work, then explorer.exe is buggered, and the PC may have to be reinstaleld with windows.

The problem arises that you can't boot to desktop therefore how can you attempt to fix the issue?
I deal with this all the time at my shop. It can be complicated but you have to take a beach head mentality. Get a foothold and move forward. I don't know your capabilities or available software/hardware tools but here goes a couple things to try.
Use a W2K or XP OS disc and boot the computer from the cd. Choose the repair option when asked what do you want to do. You can type in help and get a list of tools that you can use. The one you want to run is chkdsk Type this chkdsk /p press enter and let it run. Type exit when it finishes.
If this gets you back to desktop boot into safemode w/ network disconnect your network cable and defragment your hard drive.
When that finishes plug back into the internet and go to a free online virus scanner like www.trendmicro.com. Run the free scan and they will clean your machine of virus. NOT spyware. You'll need adaware se from www.lavasoft.com or spybot s&d from www.kolla.de well you can find it easier on say cnet.com under software. Be careful if you go to cnet. They will show you something that looks like spybot but scroll down till you see the download link!! These tools if successful will get you 90% clean. The other stuff is to complicated to address here.
Sorry for the long post but you blew up your machine.
I hope this helps.

Oh Morpheus,
XP uses the same file structure and kernel for operation as W2K, and NT is the Grandpa! This fix applies to XP as well.
I have to agree with you. XP is easier to configure and maintain than W2K. But when you get this beauty it's all over for average home user. If this doesn't work find a reputable shop. Not the cheapest or quickest accessible. Don't use your mothers brothers cousins bestfriends aunts friends son in law either. I'll kick your hiney.

His "capabilities" involve poking things with a sharpened stick... And it's someone else's turn to fish the dead racoons out of his puter...
