A widely used one is rapidshare. You can create a free account and it will show the number of downloads but not who.

    why not ?
its kindof neat to know just how many people
download something you ve put up there

If say you ve posted to a forum it lets you
know how active it is and how popular the
    celeb or whatever really is

then, if you post just to one particular person
it shows up that theyve got what you sent

    It's tough reading it poem-style.

If you're tied by the upload host and it doesnt count number of downloads, you could try uploading a simple hotlink page to a free basic server like lycos or summit, then open up the html in word or notepad and add a counter code, (effectively whenever someone clicks on the url which links to the file on your prefferred host, a number will be added)

It might not be the most accurate way obviously because someone might click to go to the host file, but then decide not to actually download, or may not finish a download, which the counter won't take into account.

hotscripts dot com provides a counter script if you're interested

Yes, the only way i can think of doing that is what harvestthesouls is saying... I don't know about any free place that allows you to see how many times a file has been downloaded...
