Lightbulb Universal charger for mobile phones

BBC NEWS | Technology | Universal charger for phones plan

Yes mobile phone manufacturers are going to produce mobiles with a standard charger!

The world's biggest mobile phone makers and network operators have backed plans to create a universal phone recharger.
What kind of madness is this? I mean how will companies cope.

When I buy an item from Sony for instance, I buy it in the sure knowledge that the memory sticks and power charges will be totally bespoke, and absolutely useless for any other device I might have.

Heck I damaged the power lead for my £80 Walkman recently, and happily paid out £30 for a new power lead, as I'd not be able to get any other lead from any other company for this.

Surely they're missing a trick here?

The majority of new handsets will support the re-charger by 2012.
I'm sure Sony's phones will be some of the exceptions.

You'd better believe it. Damn charge leads cost almost as much as the phones. It means in my laptop bag instead of taking laptop and one USB lead, I have about 4 tangled up.

Curse you Sony!
