Send footballs to NBC to save Friday Night Lights.

Just like nuts to CBS to save Jericho, and sunflower seeds to USA to save The 4400, footballs are now being sent to NBC to save Friday Night Lights, which I consider the best show on TV right now. Plus I need my weekly dose of Minka Kelly and Aimee Teegarden.

Though critically acclaimed and a winner of multiple awards, the football-themed drama Friday Night Lights has had trouble finding its footing since it debuted in 2006. After posting disappointing numbers in its first season, NBC made a bold decision to renew the show for a second season, seemingly with the support of many of the network's higher-ups, who happen to be big fans of the show.

However, it doesn't look like that will be the case for a third season. In a brief chat with Radar Online, NBC Entertainment cochairman Ben Silverman gave a grim forecast for the Peabody Award-winning show.

"I love it, you love it," Silverman told Radar. "Unfortunately, no one watches it. That's the thing with shows. People have to watch them. We're NBC, we have a reputation to uphold. And, man, with this writers' strike...well, we'll see what we can do."

The show is currently in its second season, where it had the advantage of completing 15 episodes of a 22-episode order before being halted due to the writers' strike (most shows were lucky to get in a dozen episodes in this strike-shortened season). According to Web site TVShowsOnDVD.com, the ever-present "industry source" says that the second-season DVD set will be released on April 22, with all 15 episodes of season two.

Universal Home Video has yet to officially announce a release date, but if the rumor is true and the date is set in stone, it bodes poorly for the show to get back to work and finish the season even if the strike is resolved. However, DVD release dates are often malleable, so Friday Night Lights fans should keep their fingers crossed.

Friday Night Lights follows the on-field and--more often--off-field drama surrounding the Dillon Panthers, a high school football team in sports-crazed Texas. The show stars Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Aimee Teegarden, and Taylor Kitsch.

Rumor has it, they will end the series with a 2-hour TV-movie/finale.

That website http://www.savefridaynightlights.tv/ has sent more than 11,000 (American) footballs to NBC, with more coming every day. Also:

According to Variety, NBC is pitching the idea of "multiple broadcast windows" to other networks, presumably to share production costs and give the show a chance to live and breathe in other markets. Among the partners NBC is allegedly consulting with are the CW, TNT, E!, and G4. In November, the show was rumored to be shopped to sports-centric ESPN, but NBC later denied that prospect.

Hopefully not G4, because not too many people get that channel. I don't.
