    Default Cartoonists Remember 9/11

    Cartoonists Remember 9/11
    By Jim Borgman

The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is being marked in many ways, but few with the reach of 93 comic strips devoted to remembrances of the shared tragedy. Cartoonists have joined together before — most notably on Thanksgiving after 9/11 in 2001 — but never on this scale.

    Beetle Bailey
Created in 1950, the bewildered serviceman has kept readers laughing even during conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Creator Mort Walker has rarely gotten too topical with the strip. He says the Army foibles he portrays are timeless.

    Buckles
David Gilbert's strip about an eternally wry puppy has been running since 1996.

    Dick Tracy
The venerable crimestopper celebrates his 80th birthday in October. Here, the strip by Mike Curtis and Joe Staton heralds one of the heroes of 9/11.

    Hagar the Horrible
The crusty Viking takes time to remember 9/11. The strip, created by the late Dik Browne in 1973, is now maintained by his son, Chris Browne.

    Hi and Lois
Created in 1954 by legendary cartoonist Mort Walker, who still writes Beetle Bailey, the strip is now co-created by his son, Brian Walker, a comic strip historian.

    Mutts
The spare lines of this minimalist strip recall the primitive style of Krazy Kat at the dawn of newspaper comics in 1913. Drawn by Patrick McDonnell, Mutts debuted in 1994.

    Reply All
Just a few months old, this strip about the failures to communicate in a modern world is by Donna Lewis, who has a day job at the Department of Homeland Security. This panel pays tribute to a co-worker's husband who died in Afghanistan.
