Flyweight Selby (left) won a silver medal at the World Championships in Azerbaijan Flyweight Andrew Selby has moved a step closer to reaching the 2012 Olympics by beating Khalid Yafai in the first bout of a three-fight 'box-off' at the British Amateur Boxing Championships.
Welshman Selby, 22, out-punched his rival 26-12 at York Hall in London.
Selby and Birmingham's Yafai both reached the quarter-finals of the World Championships last month, qualifying them for a place at the London games.
But with only one place available, GB Boxing scheduled a three-fight decider.
Yafai, also 22, will have a chance to level the series on Saturday on the final day of the championships. Should that happen, a third and final bout is scheduled for the Olympic test event at the Excel Arena from 23-27 November.
The GB Championships pit the top amateur fighters from Scotland, England and Wales against members of GB Boxing's Olympic squad in 10 male weight categories and one women's division.
The weight categories in which Olympic places are still available are light-flyweight (49kg), men and women's lightweight (60kg), middleweight (75kg), light-heavyweight (91kg) and heavyweight (91kg).
