    Question Question Re:Statcounter

    Hi,

    A techy question.

Every time I change pages on Newsgab, the page effectively loads properly but I have to live with “Connecting to www statcounter com" for approximately 108 seconds, after which the page-loading bar-counter (Firefox 3.6) shows page loading complete.

    Why?

Is “statcounter” an integral or necessary part of Newsgab machinations, an interloper or a hang-up with my poor old PC (P4 XP Pro)?

    Any useful advice appreciated.

I can and have at times terminated the statcounter connection, is this a problem - does it cause any adverse effects for Newsgab?

I can live wiv it, it does not adversely affect me/PC as far as I know, but it is annoying.

    Thx.

Hi mate, statcounter is nothing more than one of the handful of applications that we use to monitor the 'stats/usage' data associated with our site. Nothing to worry about although it seems pretty strange that it's taking so long to communicate back to base when your browsing.

Note I've positioned the code as being one of the last things to load so it shouldn't mess with your browsing experience hopefully.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

According to the html code, the site pulls all the statcounter files directly from their site. I dare say that most webistes that use statcounter are configured the same. This means that if their server(s) are busy, you'll have to wait until the files get loaded, or the page times out.

Not sure if Chief will condone this next step (remove if you don't), but if u use Firefox, you can use an add-on to block the content from the statcounter website. That way the pages will load much quicker.

Alternatively, Chief could host the files locally on the site, but I reckon the files will still contain links back home, and will not really solve the problem.

    Ok, Thank you guys.

As I said I can live with it and can ignore it for as Chief says, it doesn't stop any thing, it just annoys me.

However, you have given me some food for thought.

I expect the delay, which is constant and happens on every page, is therefore down to my poor old PC. I keep promising myself to replace it but have grown quite attached to it.

Time to start saving I think.
